How our horses spend their days.
Keeping our horses happy and healthy is our top priority as Sunset Ranch. Here our horses are on large irrigated pasture,
were they spend their days enjoying the sun and company of other horses. The ranch is over 20 acres which 90% is covered in
irrigated pasture for year round grazing. This is the best environment for our horses to grow. They are constantly moving,
eating, and socializing, you can't get any better than that.
There is also a great level of exposure to other elements that helps our horses minds develop into mature thinking creatures.
We have goats, cows, chickens, geese, pigs, dogs, and more. Not to mention the wild life from rabbits to the occasional bear.
We boarder a pheasant hunting club so are horses are also exposed to seasonal shooting.
All horses are kept in herd type settings for maximum exposure and socialization. When horses are started in spring they
come into the barn and are put on a work program to meet their individual needs.
As weanlings they learn to stand tie, be ponied from other horses, and have basic handling. Then as yearlings they are
introduced to trailers and being saddled. All the while continuing with basic ground manners and round pen work. Once they
have reached their second birth they come back in from pasture where they again, start more advanced work in round pen, ground
work, and prepare to carry a rider. Not all of our two year olds reach this point. Some need more physical or mental development
and we wait until later in the year up until there third birthday. We see our horses as a long term investment, rushing our
two year olds is not in their best interest or ours.
It's why we do it!
I have been crazy about horses and animals all my life. Sharing my love of all these wonderful creatures is what I love
to do. I started working around horses when I was in elementary school. Cleaning stalls for a little pocket change. I knew
one day I was going to have a horse on my own. In the mean time I brought home every other possible animal.
Once out of high school with two of my own horses, I rode horses for other people and worked at local tack stores. This
was a great experience to learn about all the equipment, correct use and fit. I then went on to college where I studied equine
science and earned a certificate. Even today I still continue animal science classes and an active life style related to horses.
Currently I am working towards a degree as a registered nurse, but my true passion is and always will be horses.
For the time being I spend all my free time devoted to my horses and continue to expand and share my knowledge.
